Congress in Visby

Gotland, with 57 000 year-round inhabitants and 950 000 visitors annually, has the capacity to handle large-scale meetings and events. As an example, the single most important annual political forum in Swedish politics, the Almedalen Week, is held here.

An outstanding meeting destination, Gotland boasts a unique location, good connections, rich cultural traditions, a fascinating history and epic natural surroundings. The island’s main locality is the World Heritage town of Visby, with its medieval town wall, preserved alleyways and buildings from the Middle Ages onwards, and teeming with restaurants. Since Gotland is close to the mainland and since everything in Visby is within walking distance, meetings acquire a personal touch and are productive. Wisby Strand Congress & Event has a capacity for 1 000 participants, a fantastic location, encircled by a medieval town wall and offering a magnificent view of the sea within walking distance.

Visby Airport is a mere 15 minutes by bicycle, or 5 minutes by car, from the city center. About 70% of the hotel rooms are eco-certified. Connections are extremely good with 8-12 flights and 3-5 ferry departures daily. Direct flights to Gotland year round:

Stockholm Bromma (35 min)
Stockholm Arlanda (40 min)
Göteborg (60 min)
Malmö (60 min)

In summer, there is air transport to and from Oslo, Helsinki, Norrköping, Ängelholm, Umeå, and Sundsvall.

Three hours by ferry from Nynäshamn and Oskarshamn, and in summer from Västervik.

Local merits

The Hanseatic city of Visby, with its unique cultural riches, has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. A town wall 3½ km long encloses the old stone houses, churches and streets of the merchants. The imposing church ruins, now used for meetings and events, are a reminder of the riches of medieval Gotland.

Gotland is an eye-opener! It brings its history to life and invites you to join in, whether in medieval ruins, in a barn out in the countryside or in a fishing village by the sea. Why not try a dinner in one of Visby’s marvelous church ruins? S:t Nicolai Kultudralen, an amazing church ruin in the middle of Visby, organizes banquet dinners, mingle, sensational fire shows, medieval feasts and other social events. Since Gotland is acclaimed for its high living standards, its culinary culture is an essential ingredient in any meeting here. Enjoy one of the local specialties, such as grilled lamb, asparagus, cheese from a farm dairy, truffles and abbey beers.

Adventures are arranged year round in Visby’s towers and ruins, traditional island games, bicycle and bus excursions with culinary stops, climbing limestone cliffs, hot tub bathing, offshore fishing, outings to Fårö in the footsteps of Ingmar Bergmans, guidings and lots more.

When organizing a meeting, it is smart to choose a destination that caters to different tastes. That makes Gotland a wise choice.

Green get-togethers

The Gotland Region is an eco-municipality working with a focus on energy and climate, water, sustainable options and natural diversity. Gotland has the most hours of sunshine and good biofuel availability, and is one of Europe’s best locations for wind power.

Both air and ferry connections utilize environmental management systems certified in accordance with ISO 14001. These focus on constantly improving their environmental program through making the reduction of fossil fuels a priority.

The distance from airport or ferry terminal to congress facility and hotel can be managed on foot or by bicycle. A fifteen-minute bike ride from Visby Airport to Visby city center, or five minutes from ferry terminal to the city center. Congress facilities, hotels, sights and shops are all within a five- to ten-minute walk. At the airport and ferry terminal, you will be able to choice between bicycle transport, electric shuttle buses and eco-taxis and buses.

For its size, Gotland has more charging stations for electric cars, which can be easily hired, than anywhere in Sweden. Located near tourist sites, hotels and other lodgings, these stations contribute to a flexible and sustainable transit system.

Wisby Strand Congress & Event conducts a systematic evaluation of its ecological environment and is a member of GMIC (Green Meeting Industry Council). Its facility is heated by warm water from the Baltic Sea.

The majority of the island’s restaurateurs select locally produced goods, and many work closely with the local farms. All the major hotels are eco-certified.
